BIO 127 – Introduction to Marine Biology and Tropical Ecology
Experience the marine biology and tropical ecology of Belize firsthand. You will have unique opportunities to study and experience tropical jungles, coral reefs, savannas, limestone caves, mangroves, lagoons, and estuaries. Explore the habitats of manatees, spider monkeys, Hawksbill Sea Turtles, and saltwater crocodiles. Experience all of this while immersed in Gales Point’s Creole culture.

Biology majors serve as group leaders and biological experts for the foundation course.
This course satisfies Marymount University’s Liberal Arts Core requirement for a Natural Science with Laboratory.The trip to the zoo showed me how certain programs can both help wildlife and educate the community. The animals were all being taken care of but they were also showing people how important they are to Belize.

Course instructor: Dr. Todd Rimkus
Dr. Todd Rimkus has served Marymount University as a faculty member since 1996. Dr. Rimkus is actively involved with undergraduate research at Marymount University, engaging students in research in the area of growth and development of turtles. Dr. Rimkus’ research includes turtle tagging, and turtle egg physiology. he has presented with students at local and national conferences on a variety of topics related to turtle growth and development.
Dr. Rimkus is the founder of Hawksbill Hope Foundation and has been teaching in the Belize study abroad program several years. One of the highlights for students studying in Belize is the opportunity to be involved with research and preservation of endangered Hawksbill Sea turtles.
Students enrolling in Marine Biology and Tropical Ecology courses should also enroll in SOC-127-SA — Through the Social Lens: Belize
